REHVÉAL™ Field Journal

A catalogue of better questions.

Observed truths, earned over three decades, that change the question an executive walks into the room with. Not content to consume. A way of seeing to return to.

No. 011 · Candor · October 2026
The question it changes
From “Do we invite candor?” to “Have we made candor survivable?”
The assumption it dislodges
That protecting information is the same as protecting the person who introduced it.
Where it was observed
Outside Chatham House in London, discovering the physical home of a phrase that had quietly accompanied decades of executive meetings.
No. 010 · Systems · October 2026
The question it changes
From “why are we still doing this?” to “what does this workaround know that the formal organization does not?”
The assumption it dislodges
That workarounds are exceptions to the structure, clutter to be cleared in the next modernization. They are part of it: a second architecture carrying judgment, relationships and dependencies the formal system never captured.
Where it was observed
Operations floors where the spreadsheet, the standing phone call and the person everyone knows to call were quietly holding the work together.
No. 009 · Leadership · September 2026
The question it changes
From “what can we automate?” to “what was this work solving for the people performing it?”
The assumption it dislodges
That early, repetitive work is only a cost to be removed. Much of it is where judgment is formed, one reconciliation at a time.
Where it was observed
A first project: reconciling more than a thousand lines in Excel to inform a perioperative decision between two suppliers.
No. 008 · Transformation · September 2026
The question it changes
From “do we have a plan?” to “what is the organization actually capable of doing?”
The assumption it dislodges
That readiness is summoned in the moment of disruption. It is built on ordinary days, in how an organization operates when nothing appears to be wrong.
Where it was observed
Hospital operations through disruption, where the plan recorded what was intended and the moment revealed what had actually been built.
No. 007 · Systems · September 2026
The question it changes
From “how does this function get a strategic seat?” to “which decisions is this function connecting that the rest of the organization still handles as if they were separate?”
The assumption it dislodges
That strategic status comes from title, chair, or proximity to the CEO. Strategic emerges where someone holds the whole picture no one else sees at once. Titles follow. They do not create.
Where it was observed
The Fall IDN Summit floor in Phoenix, September 2026, in rooms of supply chain and pharmacy leaders asking how they get taken seriously as strategic.
No. 006 · Systems · August 2026
The question it changes
From “how do we remove this friction?” to “what is this friction protecting?”
The assumption it dislodges
That all friction is drag. Much of it is judgment, slowed on purpose. Removing it looks like efficiency and lands as blindness. The friction that most often needs preserving is the pause where a human catches what the system cannot.
Where it was observed
Clinical, operational, and governance moments across healthcare and enterprise where a second signature or a committee pause has quietly prevented an irreversible call.
No. 005 · Leadership · August 2026
The question it changes
From “what will this decision accomplish?” to “what will this decision mean to the person on the receiving end once it leaves the room?”
The assumption it dislodges
That leaders and recipients experience the same decision on the same scale. Leaders experience their decisions in sequence. The people on the receiving end often experience them as a before and an after.
Where it was observed
Decades of executive decision-making, and the pattern of returning years later to realize that a twenty-minute call had shaped someone else’s five years.
No. 004 · Identity · August 2026
The question it changes
From “how do I become more consistent?” to “how well do I actually know myself?”
The assumption it dislodges
That consistency is a discipline of showing up the same way every time. Sameness repeats while consistency holds, and it begins with knowing what belongs to you before any room asks.
Where it was observed
Years beside the most credible leaders in the room, and in the versions of myself I had to let go of before I understood them.
No. 003 · Transformation · August 2026
The question it changes
From “can we afford this?” to “have we earned enough to ask people to cross the bridge it requires?”
The assumption it dislodges
That transformation is a financing problem. It is a capital-allocation problem, and the decisive capital never appears on the balance sheet. It accrues slowly, one decision at a time, and is spent all at once.
Where it was observed
Months of advisory conversations with health systems, founders, boards, and private equity teams.
No. 002 · Systems · July 2026
The question it changes
From “which option is right?” to “which good do we choose, and by what discernment?”
The assumption it dislodges
That hard calls are a contest between a right answer and a wrong one.
Where it was observed
The AHRMM floor, listening to leaders weigh dozens of good options that all sounded alike.
No. 001 · Leadership · July 2026
The question it changes
From “what is the best or newest solution?” to “what is actually true for us?”
The assumption it dislodges
That the constraint is technology or capability. The constraint is the ability to see clearly.
Where it was observed
The AHRMM exhibit floor, in the quiet weight beneath every confident pitch.
